Walks in and around the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken

According to annual traditions, from 15 April to 8 May, you can visit the Royal Greenhouses in Laeken. Starting in 1873, architect Alphonse Balat, a tutor to Victor Horta, designed a greenhouse complex that complemented the classical style castle in Laeken. The greenhouses were designed to offer the silhouette of a glass city, nestled into an undulating park landscape.

A visit to the greenhouses is both an indoor and outdoor experience. Once on-site, you will be able to choose between a short (1.5 hours) or long (2.5 hours) visit during the day. You can only participate in the shorter visit during the nocturnes.

On the long route, your visit starts with a walk through the gardens of the Royal Domain. This allows you to see the wonderful architecture of the greenhouses from a distance and discover special places, such as the temple ruins at the edge of one of the ponds or the rose arch. You will visit the greenhouses after the outdoor walk.

On the short walk, you will only tour the greenhouses.

The greenhouse complex comprises the following parts:

  • The Palm Plateau with the Débarcadère, the Palm Greenhouse, the Azalea Greenhouse, the Geranium Gallery, the Diana Greenhouse and the Mirror Greenhouse
  • the Embarcadère, which was the reception area for guests in the past
  • the square Congo Greenhouse with subtropical plants
  • the domed Winter Garden with palm trees and tree ferns, among other things
  • the Orangery, in which the orange and laurel trees and camellias that are now on the esplanade in front of the Orangery are overwintered

On Thursday, 28 April, we will provide support for persons with reduced mobility with an adapted route (2 hours) and assistance at the critical points along the route.
